Shani Amavasya is celebrated by those who study astrology and believe in luck. This festival is celebrated on a Saturday or Shanivar that has no moon according to the Hindu calendar. In 2011, Shani Amavasya falls on December 24th. This festival is in honor of the lord Shani who reigns over inauspicious things. This diety is also known to cause chaos in peoples’ lives. The Lord Shani likes oil so devotees bathe him in oil and fast for the entire day refusing to drink even a single drop of water or listen to any Hindi phone sex. Those afflicted by shani mahadasha or pitra dosh ritually worship Lord Shani on that day. This day is also celebrated by honoring ancestors with Trapan Acts. Various rituals and religious acts will be performed on the day of Shani Amavasya. India welcomes this festival with great enthusiasm.
